The best way to field dress cables is to always use clear plastic sleeving (in a pinch a zip-lock or plastic bag can be used) but remember to seal only 1 side of the bag and leave the other side open so moisture will evaporate. If you seal both sides it becomes a green house and traps moisture in the connection. If you have a way to slant the cable off the ground always make sure the tied side is up so any rain, snow etc, runs around the connection.
